No Man is an Island
When
Guam is attacked by the Japanese during World War II, U. S. Navy radioman
George R. Tweed and five other Americans escape to the centre of the
island. Though the other men are all eventually killed, Tweed evades
capture and takes refuge in a leper hospital run by a dedicated priest,
Father Pangolin. By using the priest's radio, Tweed issues encouraging
news bulletins to the natives until the Japanese learn of the reports
and burn the hospital. Tweed is then befriended by the Cruz family,
who hide him in a cave and supply him with food.
The daughter, "Joe," brings him a small hand mirror with
which he flashes information on enemy artillery installations to a
U.S. warship. He then successfully eludes a Japanese patrol and swims
out to a small boat sent from the warship. His information enables
the Navy to pinpoint and completely destroy the Japanese defences.
After the war, Tweed returns to Guam for a reunion with his many island
friends.
